![]() So the battery may not be completely dead, but due to an issue with the wiring harness, it is struggling to function. ![]() There is also the potential of your Mini shuttering whenever you attempt to turn it on. If that wire is frayed or damaged, the battery could die, leading to your Mini not starting. One of those wires is connected to the wiring harness. The battery provides power to your Mini, and in order to do so, it has to be connected to electrical wires that feed to different parts in your vehicle. The second sign that will immediately alert you to wiring harness issues is your Mini not starting due to a dead battery. So this alert in conjunction with one of the other alerts mentioned-below will solidify that the issue is indeed the wiring harness. When the light illuminates it can be difficult to tell if it is because of the wiring harness or if it is related to another part. This leads to the check engine light being illuminated. If there is an issue with one of the wires, the wiring harness will alert the computer. The wiring harness is also in charge of reporting back to the main computer in your Mini. The first sign to be aware of is the check engine light. The wiring harness plays a large role in the overall function of your Mini, so it is important to be aware of what signs your Mini gives you if any issues are occurring.Įlectrical problems can be dangerous, so knowing these signs helps prevent further damage and harm. The wiring harness keeps all the wires together until the last possible moment before they need to separate to their essential parts, including the battery, alternator, and the starter. This is why the wiring harness is in place, to keep the wires stronger and more durable. If the wires all ran through individually, they would not be as strong, so the potential for fraying or being disconnected is greater. Wiring harnesses are used to help make the wires last longer. The wiring harness is not only a gathering place, but it also reduces the potential of serious electrical issues that could occur throughout your Mini. ![]() The wiring harness gathers all the electrical wires into one place and then is connected to the power source at the fuse box. The electrical wires that run through various parts of your Mini all meet back to a part called the wiring harness. Each is required in order for your Mini to produce optimal function. Your Mini is made up of numerous electrical components. The wiring harness plays a crucial role in the overall performance of your Mini, so knowing what it is and how to spot issues will help you prevent greater damage. One of those parts is the wiring harness. In addition to this, there will come times when different parts break down and require more attention and repair. Hope this helps someone with similar problems with their HK amp.The best way to keep your Mini fun and powerful is regular servicing and maintenance. I had to cut the ends back a few inches in order to find some decent copper, but when I rejoined them with a single 'choc block' connector - the radio immediately came into life - bypassing the 'quick fix' isolating switch I had previously installed. The connector comprised of 4 Red/Brown cables joined in a clear plastic sheath.Īs can be seen from the pictures, it was so badly corroded that the cables fell apart when touched & the 'clear' sheath was now green with copper corrosion. I`ll add that the footwell area was also awash with water from an as-yet unidentified leak. ![]() Just in front of the seat lying next to the wiring loom was a very badly corroded 4- way connector. I had to also incorporate a switch into this circuit to switch off this feed when the ignition was off, as I found it could confuse rear wiper & alarm into coming on in some circumstances - But it worked.Įarlier Today, I had been been looking around under the drivers footwell carpet for the 'Diode' that connects to the high level brake light - When It fails, the high level light remains permanently on even with the ignition off.Īlthough I didn't locate the Diode, I did find what seems to have caused the HK amp & HU to loose power. I had also tried swapping both the Amp & HU but the problem remainedĪs a quick bodge / workaround, I simply fed the missing permanent supply with the feed from the ignition switched supply. The problem got gradually worse happening more often, until the unit completely lost all power.Īn inspection inside both the amp & head unit showed no obvious faults - but on inspecting the head units connectors, I found the supply voltage was variable & when measurable was only around 3 volts.įrom what I could figure, the wiring wasn't straightforward as the amp seemed to supply the HU with this power, but it had dissappeared somewhere along the way. The problem started off with whole radio / amp unit occasionaly loosing power - the display vanishing for a few seconds. Ive had a particular problem with my Aug 2004 build HK Amp unit for a couple of years now. ![]()
